But carrying a big stick – is.
I really don’t care what would happen with Iran. They’ve cultivated their own little empire of evil for threen decades now and they can keep doing this forever. Sure, Israel has an open account with Iran – for them helping Hizzbullah kicking our ass in Lebanon for almost three decades. But I can live with such an open account. It helps me keep in mind that victory in the battlefield is something one should work for.
Now, a nuclear Iran is a new game. The risk looks somewhat high – and there is no reword for accepting this increased risk.
So Israel is probably cooking something. All of these airforce drills in the mediternian, trying to get metrics on how far can one fly and the way bombing accuracy and fighters shield efficiency drop over time on the air.
I know absolutely nothing on air force operations but I read Benny Peled’s book. Benny Peled was an air force general in two decisive wars. In 1973 he was the commander of the israeli air force in the Yom Kippur defeat. 6 years earlier he was the designer and commander of operation Moked, in which the IAF has completely wiped out the air forces of Egypt, Syria and Jordan in 3 hours.

Peled, a true military intellectual, analyses the causes of the Yom Kippur defeat (in addition, he portrays some rather embarrasing stories of the corrupt IDF of the 1950s and 1960s).
Israel’s IDF and IAF are probably not the best examples for organizations that learn from their own mistakes, but Operation Moked is a high enough standard to keep up with. Operation Cast Lead (Dec-2008 – Jan-2009) had failed to defeat Hamas, but it was a snadbox for IAF plans. The arial part of the attack lasted 4 minutes. That’s right. The entire operation took weeks. I am more and more convinced that the entire land manouver was only a disguise for these 4 minutes.

So Israel carries a big stick. Now what?
The French foreign minister is now using this big stick to threaten Iran. Cinically, we can say that he is using Israel to bail Europe from the punishment Iran is about to take. That’s OK, too. Noone know what Iran is going to do and whether it is going to look like 1945 Japan (that is August/September 1945, not January…). What we do know, is that by carrying this big stick, we’re more likely to be happy with the results.

אז למה לישראל להתעסק עם אבידות האויב? את מי זה מעניין?
אני, למשל, חושב שהרבה יותר מעניין לחקור, ולפרסם בפומבי מה היו מטרות המבצע, וכיצד מודדים האם הן הושגו. נפלו טילים בבאר שבע. זה בסדר?
זה לא?
מה עושים כדי לשנות את המצב?
זה דומה למה שהיה בלבנון השניה? באיזה אופן?
מה נלמד מלבנון השניה וייושם בעופרת יצוקה?
מה עשה צבא היבשה של צה”ל?
מה עושה צה”ל עם העובדה שכבר ב-2006 הוכח שחיל אויר לבדו לא מסוגל לעצור ירי טילים?
למה צבא היבשה לא עשה בעצם כלום בעופרת יצוקה?
נתניהו, שהיה בכלל באופוזיציה בזמן עופרת יצוקה, פוחד מהשאלות האלה לא פחות מברק. נכון, תשובה לכל אחת מהשאלות לעיל תוכיח שחור על גבי לבן שברק שר בטחון גרוע מאין כמותו.
אבל, תשובה כזו תעלה את שאלת ההמשך: מה הממשלה הנוכחית מתכוננת לעשות כדי לשפר את המצב?
התשובה, חוששני, היא שהממשלה הנוכחית תעשה בדיוק מה שהיא עשתה בקשר למשבר המים: תגיד לאזרחים שלה ללכת ולחפש את החברים שלהם.

אוקטובר 2000. הרשות הפלסטינית פותחת במלחמה נגד מדינת ישראל (האינתיפדה השניה). הערבים שחיים בתוך מדינת ישראל )”ערביי ישראל”) מצטרפים למלחמה. לוקח למדינה זמן להגיב אבל כשהיא עושה את זה, היא גובה מהאויב 13 הרוגים והערבים הישראלים שקטים עד עצם היום הזה.

אלא שהמדינה – שמעולם לא ידעה מה טוב בשבילה – הולכת לחקור איך וכיצד קרה שניצחה, לגמרי בטעות, באיזה קרב קטנטן..
. מה שהמדינה בעצם עשתה, זה להבטיח את תוצאות האינתיפדה הבאה. ברור לחלוטין שבפעם הבאה, אף שוטר לא יהיה אידיוט
מספיק כדי להרוג מחבל, אם הוא יודע שהמחבל הוא אזרח ישראל. בפעם הבאה שהערבים יחסמו את ואדי ערה, הוא ייחסם לנצח (או יהפוך לכביש אגרה…)

עכשיו, אפשר להניד ראש ולומר שבררו שהמדינה בעד אויביה ונגד עצמה וברור שאם אפשר לעשות משהו לטובת המחבלים המדינה מיד תקפוץ ותעשה את זה על הצד הטוב ביותר. השאלה היא למה זה קורה. לדעתי, התשובה הפשוטה היא שהאינתיפדה השניה היא מלחמה בה הפסדנו. לו ישראל היתה מנצחת במלחמה – תוך שהיא גובה מספר גבוה של אבידות מהאויב כולל ערביי ישראל – לא היה צריך את ועדת אור וממילא לא היו נפסקים כאלה פיצויים לאויב.
פיצויים בעקבות מלחמה זה מה שגרמניה שילמה לצרפת אחרי מלחמת העולם הראשונה. זה לא משהו שישראל צריכה לשלם.

תן שקל וחצי, קח התחלה של סיפור באורך חצי עמוד.כבר יותר מעשר שנים שזו הפנטזיה של מי שעובד – או עבד – בסלולר.
אנשים משלמים מאה שקלים תמורת מאתיים עמודים,
אבל ישלמו שקל וחצי עבור חצי עמוד.
פי שש, יגיד כל מי שיש לו אקסל.
אז הנה, כמה וכמה סופרים התאגדו, הקימו הוצאה לאור שעובדת עם חברות הסלולר ונותנות לקרוא סיפורים קצרים כשכל חצי עמוד שלהם – 120 מילים ליתר דיוק – עולים את השקל וחצי האלה שאמרתי.

הלכתי, נרשמתי, הורדתי סיפור.

I have always admired the American Jewry. This is not a disclaimer. They’ve earned my admiration. The recent North Carolina incident hints on the Israel should have managed its foreign affairs.
The case in hand is simple: two Republican politicians call for saving money, and said something like “let’s learn from the Jews”. An affiliated organization called [The] Republican Jewish Coalition said they won’t take no shit from no one. I’m trying to recall an example for some Israeli leader who had ever said that Israel will take no shit from no one. I could use some help here…
So, these two Republicans published an apology, saying they meant well and compared the Jews – in relation to money – the Benjamin Franklin’s “a penny saved is a penny earned”, no less. Again, I can’t recall a single Israeli leader who had ever said something similar to that (maybe Isaac, the patriarch the bible takes pride of his ability to create wealth, but that was some 4000 years ago).
So, what have we got? Outside Israel, the Jews are the beacon of creating wealth. Nevertheless, they don’t like to be referred at as “the Jews”, even as a praise. If you do refer to the as a collective, you’d better have an articulate apology letter at hand.
Why? Because this is the way Jews are doing business. Look more carefully at this and you’ll find that this is also the way saved pennies are becoming dollars.
